There are many reasons why we need to skim coat a wall. One of the good reason to skim coat wall is to overcome wall imperfections such as uneven wall surface, too many visible nail holes and etc. Sometime skim coat is required after removing wallpaper cause by ugly and uneven wall. After skim coat the wall, usually follow up with applying top coat paint of your choice.

Skim coat generally can help to fix the uneven surface of the base layer and keep the wall smooth. The methods are as below:

1. Get ready the “stopping compound” that you get it from your local hardware shop. It is fast to dry, better bonding and better water resistant
2. Clean surface base from dust, dirt and oil that can reduce adhesiveness of coating mix
3. Spread the ready mixed “stopping compound” with a trowel or drywall knife over a rough or uneven wall surface.
4. In general, you will need to apply 2-4 coats before the surface is smooth and then let it dry.
5. Final process is sanding using sandpaper to make the surface smooth.

The above steps seems simple but it required an experience and skilled painter to make the walls plaster like appearance where the walls have to be perfectly smooth.
